Pyramid Paper Weight

There is something mystical about a Pyramid paper weight. I guess we are mystified by these because we are unsure as to how they came about.

The paper weight molds can be purchased from any glass store or on line. They are generally filled with scrap glass or frit. These make ideal gifts for that special male in your life.

You can layer the glass to obtain various sections of colors or simply use the same color throughout the piece.

Since these are very large it is important to prepare the mold with kiln wash and steady the piece with kiln posts.

If you are filling the mold with frit keep in mind that the frit will shrink a lot during the firing process. To achieve a large paper weight, you might have to fill and re-fire the piece several times.

Placing objects inside the frit will capture them in the glass, but can also cause bubbles. Make sure that the material to be captured is safe for firing and can withstand the high temperature inside the kiln.

After the piece has cooled to room temperature it can easily be removed from the mold. Clean the piece with soap and warm water.

The final pyramid desk paper weight will have a polished and shiny finish.
