Memorial Day Ideas
Observed on the last Monday in the month of May, Memorial Day is one of the US Federal Holidays. Originally this holiday was known as Decoration Day. It is a time for remembering and honoring the men and women who have lost their lives while in military service.
Besides commemorating these individuals on this day by placing flowers on grave sites at cemeteries, most businesses are closed. Although there aren’t fireworks like on the 4th of July, the day is also a time for family picnics and gatherings. Running in conjunction with this holiday celebration there is also sporting events such as the running of the Indianapolis 500.
Since this particular holiday falls at the end of May, it is sometimes viewed as the beginning of summer. Schools are almost closed for the year and thoughts begin to turn to the hot sweltering months of summer. Summer in the United States is usually during the months of June, July and August; hence the end of May is like the end of the spring months.
